History

Durham has a rich history that goes back to the early colonial days. In 1701, John Lawson described Durham as the “flower of the Carolinas.” The earliest settlers were English, Scots and Irish who settled on land that was granted to the Earl of Granville by King Charles II.

After the Civil War, Durham developed its tobacco industry. This was a huge source of income for Durham and the rest of North Carolina. This industry grew in the late 1800s and helped create many other businesses in the city.

A lot of the old factories and warehouses in the area are still standing today, such as American Tobacco, Liggett and Myers and many others. These are now being turned into offices and retail shops.

These former factories have become part of the revitalization of downtown Durham and many other historic areas in the city. Some of these buildings have been turned into apartments and others are being transformed into shops, office spaces, and restaurants.
